We examined 20 elderly patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) before and after treatment with pentoxifylline (Latren). We studied
whole blood and plasma viscosity; platelet aggregation; functional state of erythrocytes and endothelium; levels of interleukin-1˜, tumor
necrosis factor, vascular endothelial growth factor, molecules of average weight; apoptosis of mononuclear cells.
Latren application in patients with CHD led to reduction of platelet aggregation, improved liquid properties of blood and endothelial
function, decreased proinflammatory cytokines level that reduced severity of endotoxemia and apoptosis. Pentoxifylline (Latren) therapy
of elderly patients with CHD not only improved tissue perfusion but also reduced severity of endogenous intoxication and increased
sustainability of cellular systems to proapoptotic impacts.
Key words: pentoxifylline (Latren) — coronary heart disease — old age — apoptosis — endotoxemia — inflammation — endothelium.
